Functionalism: Key Thinkers and Concepts

Emile Durkheim was concerned about rapid social change during industrialization. He observed that traditional societies had mechanical solidarity with strong collective values, while modern societies developed individualism that weakened social bonds. When change happens too quickly, it creates anomie (normlessness) that threatens social cohesion.

Talcott Parsons expanded functionalist theory by identifying three key similarities between society and biological organisms. Both are systems with interrelated parts organs/institutionsorgans/institutions, both have needs for survival, and each part serves specific functions to meet those needs. For Parsons, value consensus acts as the social glue binding society together, providing frameworks for cooperation and behavior.

Integration of individuals occurs through socialization and social control (positive and negative sanctions). Parsons identified four essential system needs in his AGIL schema: Adaptation (resource acquisition), Goal attainment (setting objectives), Integration (maintaining solidarity), and Latency (preserving culture between generations).

Remember this! Functionalism sees social change as evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Parsons described this as "moving equilibrium" - when one part of society changes, other parts adjust to maintain stability.

Parsons explained social evolution through structural differentiation - as societies develop, specialized institutions emerge to handle functions previously performed by single institutions (like healthcare shifting from family to the NHS). This process is gradual and maintains overall system balance.

Critiques of Functionalism

Functionalism faces several significant criticisms from different sociological perspectives. External critiques challenge its scientific validity, arguing it's not falsifiable – there's no way to prove or disprove its central claims about social functions.

Marxists reject the functionalist view of a harmonious society, arguing instead that stability only exists because the ruling class uses power and ideological control to prevent change. From this perspective, functionalism ignores power imbalances and conflict at society's core.

Action perspectives criticize functionalism for being overly deterministic. By suggesting social systems shape individual behavior to meet system needs, functionalists imply people have no free will and act merely as "puppets" controlled by the system rather than conscious agents.

Think about it: Does functionalism adequately explain rapid social change and revolution? Or does it better explain periods of stability?

Postmodernists challenge functionalism's assumption of social stability and its position as a "meta-narrative" (a grand theory explaining everything). Instead, they see society as fragmented and diverse. Robert Merton, offering internal critiques, refined functionalism by questioning three key assumptions: indispensability (suggesting functional alternatives exist), functional unity (not all parts work together), and universal functionalism (some elements benefit certain groups at others' expense).
