Functions and Types of Schools
Functionalists see schools as essential for passing down society's norms and values to the next generation. Think of it like a cultural relay race - schools hand you the baton of shared beliefs and expectations that keep society running smoothly.
The education system offers different pathways depending on your circumstances. Grammar schools select students based on academic ability, creating an elite track for high achievers. Meanwhile, state schools welcome everyone regardless of ability, aiming to provide universal education.
Not all students buy into the school system though. Paul Willis studied working-class 'lads' who formed counter school cultures - they misbehaved, mocked academic students, and rejected school values. These rebellious groups often end up reproducing the same working-class jobs their parents had.
Key Insight: Your school experience is shaped by both the type of school you attend and the peer culture you're part of - some embrace education whilst others reject it entirely.
Factors Affecting Educational Achievement
Your success at school depends on much more than just your natural ability. Parental expectations play a huge role - when your family values education and supports your learning, you're more likely to achieve higher grades and pursue further education.
Economic factors in your local area matter too. Poorer regions often lack well-funded schools or prestigious grammar schools, limiting opportunities for students regardless of their potential. It's not fair, but your postcode can significantly impact your educational prospects.
The relationship between teachers and students also influences achievement. When teachers have high expectations and believe in their students, it often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy - students rise to meet those expectations and perform better.
