Understanding Society's Building Blocks
Think about your daily life - you wake up in a family, go to school, maybe check social media, and follow certain rules without even thinking about it. These are all social structures - the different parts that make up our society.
Social structures include families, schools, the criminal justice system, workplaces, government, peer groups, media, and religion. They're like the framework that holds society together and shapes how we behave. Some sociologists reckon these structures completely control what we do, whilst others think we've got more freedom in modern times.
What makes sociology fascinating is studying the relationships between these structures and us as individuals. How does your family influence your choices? How do schools shape your values? These connections reveal loads about why society works the way it does.

How Society Actually Functions
All these social structures fit into four massive systems: cultural, political, economic, and legal systems. It's like Russian dolls - smaller structures inside bigger ones, all connected and influencing each other.
Social processes are basically what happens when these structures interact with people and each other. Some processes affect millions (like government policies), whilst others happen between just two people (like a conversation with your mate).
Socialisation is probably the most important social process you'll study. It's how you've learned everything from saying 'please' and 'thank you' to knowing what's acceptable behaviour at school versus at home. This process never stops - you're constantly picking up new social cues and adapting your behaviour.
The brilliant thing about studying socialisation is that it shows you where your beliefs actually come from. Your family, school, friends, and even Netflix are all agencies of socialisation that shape who you are without you realising it.
Remember: You're not just passively absorbing everything around you - you're also actively choosing what to accept or reject from these socialising influences!
