Le paradoxe de l'action collective et l'engagement politique
Le paradoxe de l'action collective, concept développé par Mancur Olson, peut constituer un frein à l'engagement politique. Ce paradoxe repose sur l'idée que l'existence d'un intérêt commun ne conduit pas nécessairement à une action collective.
Définition: Le paradoxe de l'action collective stipule que, individuellement, chacun a intérêt à ne pas participer à l'action tout en profitant de ses conséquences, adoptant ainsi un comportement de "passager clandestin".
Malgré ce paradoxe, les individus continuent de s'engager politiquement grâce à plusieurs facteurs :

Les incitations sélectives : Ce sont des mécanismes par lesquels une organisation politique encourage la participation, soit en réduisant le coût de la participation (par exemple, des caisses de grève), soit en créant des avantages spécifiques pour les participants (comme des emplois rémunérés ou des avantages réservés aux syndiqués).

Définition: Le répertoire d'action collective désigne l'ensemble des moyens d'action à la disposition des groupes pour faire entendre leurs revendications.
Le répertoire de l'action collective s'est considérablement élargi. Bien que la grève reste un élément central, de nouveaux moyens d'action ont émergé, visant à mobiliser davantage de citoyens et à accroître la visibilité des revendications. Ces nouvelles formes d'action s'appuient largement sur l'utilisation des médias et des réseaux sociaux numériques, et mettent souvent en scène des actions spectaculaires.
Exemple: L'association Act Up, dans les années 1980-1990, a utilisé des actions spectaculaires pour alerter sur l'épidémie de sida et défendre les droits des personnes homosexuelles.
On observe également l'émergence de mouvements plus ponctuels et spontanés, se développant en marge des structures traditionnelles et manifestant une volonté de démocratie directe.
Exemple: Le mouvement des Stylos rouges chez les professeurs en 2019 illustre cette tendance aux mobilisations spontanées et décentralisées.
Les enjeux de l'action collective ont également évolué, avec l'apparition de revendications post-matérialistes. Ces nouvelles demandes ne portent plus uniquement sur l'amélioration des conditions de vie matérielles, mais défendent des valeurs culturelles et des choix de société.
