Christian Baptism and Its Sacred Symbols
Baptism is Christianity's most important initiation ceremony, following Jesus's own baptism in the River Jordan by John the Baptist. Nearly all Christian denominations practice baptism, except Quakers and the Salvation Army who see it differently.
The ceremony uses powerful symbols that carry deep meaning. Water represents the cleansing of sin and symbolises both life and death - showing how the person dies to their old life and is reborn as a Christian. The white garment worn during baptism represents dignity and purity, whilst a lit candle symbolises Christ's light entering the person's life.
Holy oils play a crucial role too. The Oil of Baptism gives strength to resist evil, whilst the Oil of Chrism shows the person now shares in Christ's mission as priest, prophet, and king. Through baptism, someone officially becomes a member of the Church and takes on the identity and responsibilities of being a Christian.
Remember: The Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) is invoked during baptism, as Jesus commanded his disciples to "make disciples of all nations" baptising them in the name of all three persons of God.

Modern theologian Catherine LaCugna describes God as love itself: the Father as lover, the Son as beloved, and the Holy Spirit as the love that unites them.
