Exploring the First Cause Argument in Religious Studies - Theme C
The First Cause Argument
You've probably asked yourself "where did everything come from?" at some point. The First Cause Argument tackles this massive question by suggesting that God must exist because something had to start everything off.
The logic works like this: everything that exists must have been caused by something else. Since the universe exists, it too must have a cause. But here's the key bit - there had to be something eternal that wasn't caused by anything else, otherwise we'd be stuck in an endless loop of "what caused that?"
Thomas Aquinas, a medieval philosopher, made this argument famous. He noticed that nothing we see around us can create itself - your phone didn't just pop into existence, and neither did you! Since everything needs a cause, he argued there are only two possibilities: either there's an infinite chain of causes going back forever, or there must be a first cause.
Quick Think: If you lined up dominoes infinitely backwards, would the first one ever fall? Aquinas said no - that's why there must be a starting point.
But here's where it gets tricky. Critics point out a major flaw: if God is eternal and doesn't need a cause, why can't the universe be eternal too? What makes God special in not needing a cause? This objection has kept philosophers busy for centuries and shows why proving God's existence through logic alone isn't straightforward.
