Understanding the WJEC Eduqas A Level Religious Studies Assessment Structure
The WJEC Religious Studies A Level consists of three equally weighted components that provide a comprehensive study of religion, philosophy, and ethics. Each component accounts for 33% of the final qualification through 2-hour written examinations.
Component 1 focuses on an in-depth study of one major world religion chosen from Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, or Sikhism. Students explore religious figures, sacred texts, concepts, practices, and historical developments that have shaped religious thought. The examination format requires answering one question from Section A choiceoftwo and one from Section B choiceofthree.
Definition: Component 1 examines four key themes: religious figures and sacred texts, religious concepts and life, historical developments in religious thought, and religious practices and identity.
Component 2 delves into Philosophy of Religion, examining fundamental questions about the existence of God, challenges to religious belief, religious experience, and religious language. This component develops critical thinking skills through analyzing philosophical arguments and evaluating different perspectives on religious truth claims.
Component 3 explores Religion and Ethics, covering ethical thought, deontological and teleological ethics, and the complex relationship between determinism and free will. Students learn to apply ethical theories to contemporary moral issues and develop reasoned arguments about moral decision-making.
