Catholic Prayer and Life After Death
Ever wondered why Catholics pray for people who've died? Catholic teaching holds that prayers can actually help those who have passed away, especially during Mass. This connects to their belief in an afterlife where souls continue to exist.
Not everyone agrees with this view, though. Richard Dawkins and other atheists reject the idea of life after death entirely, arguing you should "make the most of the one life you've got." Freud dismissed afterlife beliefs as mere "wish fulfilment" - basically, something people want to be true rather than actual reality.
Catholics structure their prayers in specific ways, including adoration (worship), petition (asking for things), thanksgiving, and intercession (praying for others). The Our Father prayer is considered especially important, with St Augustine calling it a summary of the entire Gospel message.
Key Point: Catholic funeral services include three main parts - the Vigil (evening service), the Funeral Requiem Mass, and the Committal at the graveside.
