Peace, Justice, Forgiveness and Protest
Peace isn't simply the absence of war—it represents harmony and happiness. Christians believe God will ultimately restore peace on Judgement Day, as Isaiah 2:4 states that nations "shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore." Buddhists take a different approach, teaching that peace begins within the mind through following the Noble Eightfold Path.
Justice means establishing what is right and fair according to law. Christians see God as the ultimate judge who will establish perfect justice in the future. As Ecclesiastes 3:17 explains, "God will bring into judgment both the righteous and the wicked." Buddhists view injustice as a cause of suffering but advocate non-violent methods to achieve justice, following the teaching: "Conquer the angry one by not getting angry."
Forgiveness stands at the heart of Christian teaching. Jesus instructed his followers to forgive "seventy times seven" (Matthew 18:21-22), emphasizing unlimited forgiveness. For Buddhists, forgiveness represents loving-kindness and compassion while helping overcome hatred—one of the Three Poisons.
Think about it: While peaceful protest is a democratic right, violent protest crosses legal boundaries. How might religious teachings guide believers in addressing injustice?
Regarding protest, Christians generally support non-violent approaches following Jesus's teaching: "Blessed are the peacemakers." Martin Luther King exemplified this through peaceful civil rights protests. Similarly, Buddhists follow the First Moral Precept forbidding violence, believing protest should demonstrate compassion through Right Action and Right Speech from the Noble Eightfold Path.
