The Nature of God in Judaism
Judaism's most fundamental belief is that there's only one God - no statues, no multiple deities, just a single creator who made everything. The famous Torah commandment "Thou shall have no other Gods before me" makes this crystal clear, and it's why you'll never see statues or images of God in synagogues.
This belief is so important that Jews recite the Shema prayer every morning and evening. It starts with "Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is One" and basically sums up the entire Jewish faith in one sentence. You'll find this prayer written inside mezuzahs (those small cases on doorframes) and tefillin (prayer boxes), showing just how central it is to Jewish life.
Many Jews have such deep respect for God's name that they write it as G-d or use Hashem (meaning "the name") instead. Anything containing God's name must be properly buried when it's no longer needed - that's how sacred these words are considered.
Quick Fact: The Shema isn't just a prayer - it's Judaism's ultimate statement of faith that's been recited for thousands of years!
