Key Concepts: Peace, Justice, and Forgiveness
Peace means much more than just the absence of war - it's about creating harmony throughout society. Jesus taught that "blessed are the peacemakers," showing how important this concept is to Christianity. Justice focuses on fairness, with both the Bible and Quran emphasising that God is just and expects believers to stand up for what's right.
Forgiveness involves letting go of blame when someone wrongs you. This isn't a one-off thing - Jesus said we should forgive "not 7 times but 77 times," whilst Islamic teaching promises that "forgive others and God will forgive you." Reconciliation takes this further by actually rebuilding relationships after conflict, just like Christians believe God reconciled with humanity through Jesus.
💡 Remember: These aren't just nice ideas - they're practical guidance that billions of people try to follow in real conflicts today.
Violence: Always Wrong or Sometimes Justified?
Religious views on violence split into two main camps. Many believers argue violence is always wrong, pointing to Jesus saying "turn the other cheek" and the principle of Imago Dei - that every human deserves respect because we're made in God's image. Martin Luther King proved peaceful protest could work with his "weapon of love" approach.
However, others believe violence can sometimes be justified for self-defence or fighting injustice. The Bible mentions "an eye for an eye," and Muhammad himself fought in wars. Even UK law allows violence in self-defence to preserve your own life.
Terrorism gets condemned across religions - the Quran states that "whoever has killed a soul, it is as though he has killed all mankind." The Ten Commandments clearly say "do not kill," though some argue this doesn't apply to just wars.
