Islamic Practices: The Foundation of Muslim Life

Sunni Muslims follow the Five Pillars of Islam, which are like the essential framework of their faith. These include the Shahadah (declaration of faith from Qur'an 3:18), Salah (five daily prayers), Zakah (charity tax), Sawm (fasting during Ramadan), and Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah). Each pillar serves a different purpose - prayer connects Muslims to Allah, charity helps the community, and fasting teaches self-discipline.

Shi'a Muslims follow the Ten Obligatory Acts, which include similar practices but with some additions. They perform Salat (prayer), observe Sawm (fasting), and pay Khums (a different type of charity tax on savings). They also follow unique practices like Amr-bil-Maroof (encouraging good) and Nahi Anil Munkar (discouraging bad actions).

Jihad represents the struggle to live as a good Muslim. Greater jihad is the personal, daily battle against temptation and selfishness. Lesser jihad refers to defending the faith when under attack, but it has strict rules - the Qur'an (2:190) clearly states Muslims should "fight against those who fight you, but do not overstep the limits."

Living as a Muslim in Britain today brings unique challenges. Muslims must balance their religious obligations with work schedules, school timetables, and British social customs. During Ramadan fasting, for example, British Muslims face extra-long summer days, making the fast particularly demanding. Many British mosques now offer special support and flexible prayer times to help their communities maintain their faith whilst fully participating in British society.
