Ever wondered what Muslims actually believe about God and the spiritual world? Tawhid is Islam's most fundamental concept - it means the absolute oneness of God (Allah). Muslims believe Allah is transcendent (beyond our world), immanent (close to us), omnipotent , and perfectly just.
Angels (Malaikan) play crucial roles in Islamic belief. Unlike humans, angels have limited free will and always obey God. The archangel Jibril revealed the Quran to Muhammad, whilst Mika'il controls rain and plants, and Israfil will blow the trumpet on Judgment Day. Azrail takes souls when people die.
Prophethood (Risalah) is essential to Islam. Muslims believe in 25 prophets mentioned in the Quran, including Adam (father of humanity), Moses, Jesus (Isa), and Muhammad as the final prophet. These messengers brought God's guidance to humanity throughout history.
Quick Tip: Remember that Muslims see Muhammad as the "Seal of the Prophets" - meaning he's the last messenger God sent to guide humanity.

Think of holy books (Kutubs) as God's instruction manuals for different communities. Muslims believe God revealed the Torah to Moses, Psalms (Zabur) to David, Gospel (Injil) to Jesus, and finally the Quran to Muhammad through Jibril. They see the Quran as the final, unchanged revelation.
When someone dies, Muslims believe the soul enters Barzakh - a waiting period before Judgment Day. Azrail takes the soul, and two guardian angels question the deceased. On Qayamat (Day of Judgment), everyone will cross a narrow bridge - those with good deeds go to Janna (Paradise), whilst those with bad deeds fall to Jahannam (Hell).
The main split in Islam happened after Muhammad's death. Sunni Muslims (the majority) follow the 6 Articles of Faith, whilst Shia Muslims follow the 5 Roots of Faith and believe in 12 Imams as divinely appointed leaders after Muhammad. Both groups believe in Adalat - God's perfect justice.
Remember: The concepts of halal (permitted) and haram (forbidden) guide Muslim behaviour, helping them live according to God's will.

Islamic festivals bring communities together and mark important spiritual moments. Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of Ramadan fasting - families wear new clothes, give gifts and money to charity, share communal meals, and thank God for self-control during the holy month.
Eid al-Adha (the "greater Eid") commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice for God. Families sacrifice an animal, give meat to the poor, and remember the importance of personal commitment to God. This festival marks the end of Hajj and lasts three days.
Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Power) falls on the 27th day of Ramadan when Muslims believe the Quran was first revealed. Worshippers stay up reciting the Quran and seeking God's mercy and forgiveness - it's considered the holiest night of the year.
Ashura differs between traditions - Sunnis fast to remember Moses, whilst Shias commemorate the death of Husayn at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Some Shia men wear black, beat themselves, or make pilgrimage to Karbala to remember this tragic event that deepened the Sunni-Shia split.
Cultural Note: These festivals show how Islamic practices adapt to different countries - British Muslims celebrate these occasions whilst respecting local customs and laws.

Ready to understand how Muslims actually practice their faith? The Five Pillars are like the foundation of Muslim life. Shahadah is the declaration of faith: "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger." Salah involves five daily prayers facing Makkah, including ritual washing (wudu), standing, bowing, and prostrating.
Zakat requires Muslims to give 2.5% of their wealth to charity annually, whilst Shias also pay khums (20% on certain income). Sawm means fasting during Ramadan - no food, drink, or intimacy from dawn to sunset. Hajj is the pilgrimage to Makkah, including circling the Ka'aba seven times and standing on the Plain of Arafat.
Jihad means "struggle" - there's greater jihad (personal spiritual struggle against sin) and lesser jihad (physical defence when wronged). True jihad can only be declared by pure Muslim leaders with community support, and Muslims shouldn't strike first.
Key Point: These practices aren't just rituals - they're designed to build self-control, community unity, and constant awareness of God in daily life.
