Buddhist Ethics and Practices
Ever wondered how your actions shape your future? Karma is Buddhism's answer - it's the ethical principle that all your actions create consequences, leading to either happiness or suffering. Skilful actions like generosity and compassion create good karma, whilst unskilful actions driven by craving and hatred lead to suffering.
Buddhism teaches four sublime states that shape how you should treat others. Karuna (compassion) means recognising others' suffering and actively helping them. Metta is about genuinely wanting others to be happy and approaching them with warmth - this naturally leads to your own feelings of peace and contentment.
Buddhist meditation comes in three main forms. Samatha calms your mind through concentration and mindfulness. Vipassana helps you understand reality by focusing on Buddha's teachings. Zazen involves simply sitting and being present in the moment, connecting with your true self.
Quick Tip: The Five Precepts are Buddhism's basic ethical code - think of them as guidelines for living skilfully, covering non-violence, honesty, sexual conduct, truthful speech, and avoiding intoxicants.
Buddhist worship includes festivals like Wesak (celebrating Buddha's life) and the Bathing of Buddha ceremony, where water is poured over Buddha statues. Funerals focus on transferring merit to help the deceased in their next life, with different traditions like Tibet's sky burial or Japan's bone-picking ceremonies.

Buddha's Life and Core Teachings
Picture a pampered prince giving up everything to find the secret of ending human suffering - that's Buddha's incredible story. Born as Siddhartha Gautama around 500 BCE, he lived in luxury until encountering the Four Sights: an old man, ill man, dead man, and holy man. These showed him that ageing, illness, and death are universal, but spiritual freedom is possible.
After trying extreme asceticism and finding it useless, Buddha discovered the Middle Way - avoiding both luxury and extreme hardship. Under the Bodhi tree, he achieved enlightenment during the Three Watches of the Night, gaining knowledge of past lives, understanding rebirth cycles, and recognising that desire causes all suffering.
Buddha's core message is captured in the Four Noble Truths: life contains suffering (dukkha), suffering has a cause (tanha or craving), suffering can end, and there's a path to end it - the Eightfold Path. The Three Marks of Existence explain reality: everything involves suffering, nothing is permanent (anicca), and there's no fixed soul (anatta).
Remember: The goal differs between Buddhist schools - Theravada Buddhists aim to become an Arhat (perfected person), whilst Mahayana Buddhists aspire to be Bodhisattvas who stay in the cycle of rebirth (samsara) to help others reach Nirvana.
These teachings form Buddhism's foundation, offering practical wisdom for understanding life's challenges and working towards spiritual liberation.
