Religious Perspectives: The Sanctity of Life

Ever wondered why many religious people are so strongly opposed to euthanasia? It all comes down to the sanctity of life principle, which treats human life as sacred and God-given.

The Genesis creation story forms the foundation of this view. According to scripture, God "breathed into AdamsAdam's nostrils the breath of life," showing an intimate, personal relationship between God and humans. This suggests God is omnipotent, benevolent, and sacred - making human life inherently precious.

Biblical teachings emphasise that humans are made "in the image of God," meaning we reflect divine qualities. Psalm passages describe how God "knit me together" and knew each person "before I was born," highlighting God's omniscient nature and personal involvement in creating each life.

From this perspective, euthanasia becomes blasphemy - a deliberate rejection of God's gift of life. The Bible strongly condemns figures like Saul and Judas who committed suicide, viewing it as rejecting God's love and the possibility of redemption through Christ's victory over death.

Key Point: The Roman Catholic Church, following Pope St John Paul II's Evangelium Vitae, argues that modern society has created a "culture of death" that undermines human dignity and the sanctity of life.

Secular Perspectives: Quality Over Sanctity

Not everyone agrees with religious arguments - many non-religious thinkers prioritise quality of life over its sanctity. This approach asks whether a life worth living is more important than simply being alive.

Peter Singer's controversial stance challenges traditional thinking. He argues that a "severely defective human infant" might have less capacity for preferences than a glass presumablymeaninganonhumananimalwithsuperiorcapabilitiespresumably meaning a non-human animal with superior capabilities. For Singer, what matters isn't some "mystical enduring self" but a person's ability to have desires and preferences.

Utilitarian approaches to euthanasia involve three key judgements. The total happiness judgement says if someone's happiness outweighs unhappiness, life has quality - but when this balance tips, life may no longer be worth living. The average happiness judgement focuses on maintaining high average happiness levels. The higher qualities judgement sets minimum standards like memory, reasoning ability, and hope.

Different types of euthanasia exist in practice. Voluntary euthanasia occurs with the person's direct consent, whilst non-voluntary euthanasia happens without it. Passive euthanasia involves withdrawing treatment, and assisted suicide means someone helps another person end their own life.

Real Examples: Cases like Dax Cowart (severely burned, requesting death through years of treatment) and Diane Pretty (motor neurone disease, seeking legal right to die) show how these ethical debates play out in real situations.
