Core Christian Beliefs About Jesus and God

Ever wondered why Christians call Jesus by so many different names? Each title reveals something important about who Christians believe Jesus is. The Messiah means saviour and king of the Jews, whilst Lord represents the word of God, and Son of God shows he's the only begotten son of God. The Good Shepherd title emphasises how Jesus cares for and guides his followers.

Jesus' most famous teachings come from the Sermon on the Mount, which includes the beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer. These teachings, along with his parables, show Christians how they should live their lives. The beatitudes are particularly important as they describe the path to salvation - the journey to heaven that requires sacrifice and living according to God's will.

Christians believe in the Trinity - the idea that God exists as three persons in one: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. This might seem confusing, but it's central to understanding how Christians view God's nature. All three persons are equally divine and work together in God's plan for humanity.

Remember: The Trinity isn't three separate gods - it's one God existing in three distinct persons simultaneously.

When it comes to creation, Christians have different views. Young earth creationists believe the earth is about 6,000 years old based on a literal reading of Genesis, whilst old earth creationists accept scientific evidence that the earth is billions of years old. Both groups agree that humans are made in God's image and have dominion (responsibility) over the earth.

Understanding the problem of evil is crucial for any religious study. Moral evil comes from human actions like murder and stealing, whilst natural evil includes disasters, diseases, and climate events. This raises important questions about why an all-loving God allows suffering - something you'll likely explore in exam questions.

God's attributes describe his perfect nature: omnipotent allpowerfulall-powerful, omniscient allknowingall-knowing, and omnibenevolent alllovingall-loving. God is also transcendent (above and beyond the universe) yet immanent (present everywhere). These characteristics help explain how Christians understand God's relationship with the world and humanity.
