The Cost of Discipleship
Ever wondered why some Christians seem to live radically different lives whilst others barely change after conversion? Bonhoeffer had strong opinions about this divide, and his insights might surprise you.
Costly grace represents the heart of Bonhoeffer's theology - the idea that whilst God's grace is freely given, it demands a genuine response of sacrificial discipleship. This means totally obeying God, even when it's difficult or dangerous. On the flip side, cheap grace is simply preaching forgiveness without expecting any real repentance or life change.
Bonhoeffer argued that many Christians get grace completely wrong by thinking it's easy to obtain. Just because Jesus won grace for us doesn't mean we can live however we want and expect full benefits. Instead, Christians must engage with Jesus's suffering to truly understand grace - rejecting this means rejecting Jesus himself.
Key Insight: A believing Christian would do anything to achieve the Kingdom of God, accepting both Jesus's leadership and teachings completely.
Sacrifice, Suffering and Solidarity
Bonhoeffer's own life perfectly demonstrated his teachings - he was imprisoned and executed for standing up to Nazi Germany, showing that authentic Christian living often comes with a serious cost.
Suffering was central to Jesus's life, and Bonhoeffer believed Christians can only understand God's revelation and obtain grace by embracing this reality. Spiritual discipline itself becomes a form of sacrifice, helping believers overcome worldly temptations and accept suffering as Jesus did. Those who accept costly grace must be willing to sacrifice everything.
Solidarity - being 'for others' - flows from understanding God's revelation through Jesus. Just as Jesus interacted with political authorities on behalf of the oppressed, Christians must express solidarity with everyone, including those of different faiths and nations.
This solidarity isn't passive - it requires direct action. Christians must speak out and question injustice like biblical prophets, even when it's dangerous.
Real Example: Bonhoeffer's solidarity with Jewish people during the Holocaust led directly to his arrest and eventual execution.
