Angels and Articles of Faith

Angels play crucial roles in Islamic belief as immortal beings made from light who cannot sin. They serve as Allah's messengers, record human deeds, and perform specific duties. Angel Jibril revealed the Qur'an to Muhammad and brought news of Jesus's birth to Maryam, while Angel Izrail takes souls at death.

Sunni Muslims follow Six Articles of Faith: Tawhid (oneness of God), Angels (Malaikah), Holy Books, Prophethood (Risalah), Day of Judgement (Akhirah), and Predestination AlQadrAl-Qadr. Shia Muslims follow the Five Roots of Usul ad-Din, which include Tawhid, Divine Justice, Prophets, Authority of Imams, and Day of Resurrection.

Muslims believe Allah is the one true God with 99 names reflecting his attributes. He is described as transcendent (beyond everything), yet immanent (close to humans). Allah is also omnipotent allpowerfulall-powerful, omniscient allknowingall-knowing, and merciful.

Did you know? The Qur'an states "Say 'He is Allah, whoiswho is one'" (Surah 112:1), emphasizing the central Islamic concept of monotheism that distinguishes it from other religions.

Day of Judgement and Afterlife

The Day of Judgement YawmadDinYawm ad-Din is when Allah determines everyone's eternal fate. When God's purpose for the universe is fulfilled, Angel Israfil will sound a trumpet signaling the end of the world and resurrection. Everyone's book of deeds will be read aloud, with good deeds earning paradise and bad deeds resulting in hell.

Muslims believe in Akhirah (life after death), viewing this life as a test from Allah. After death, the soul enters Barzakh (a waiting state) until Judgement Day. This belief encourages Muslims to take responsibility for their actions, knowing Allah will hold them accountable.

Jannah (Heaven) is described as a beautiful garden with seven levels, each made of different materials and housing different prophets. The first level is silver where Adam and Eve reside, while the seventh is pure light where Abraham lives. Heaven is achieved by living religiously and doing good deeds.

Jahannam (Hell) features scorching fire pits and suffering. These descriptions serve to deter Muslims from sin, though some believe souls in hell may eventually reach heaven.

Remember: "Surely those who believe and do good deeds shall have Garden of bliss" (Surah 31:8) shows how Islamic teachings connect actions in this life with rewards in the next.

Predestination and Leadership Differences

Predestination AlQadrAl-Qadr is the belief that Allah makes things happen for a reason. Sunni Muslims generally believe Allah has made it impossible to choose anything other than what he has chosen—everything is predetermined. They often use the phrase "Insha Allah" (If Allah wills), highlighting their belief in Allah's control.

Shi'a Muslims, however, typically believe that while Allah has ultimate control, people have free will. They believe Allah knows what will happen (omniscience) but doesn't decide it. They point to Surah 13:11: "God does not change the conditions of a people for the worse unless they change what is in themselves."

Leadership differences are significant between the two branches. Shi'a Muslims respect the leadership of an Imam—a figure with special God-given authority who is both a successor and descendant of Muhammad. They believe Imams are sinless and chosen by the previous Imam through the doctrine of 'nass'.

Sunni Muslims believe leadership is not a birthright as in Shi'a Islam and have no set hierarchy. For Sunnis, an Imam is simply the person responsible for providing religious and spiritual care to a mosque congregation.

Think about it: These different interpretations of predestination affect how Muslims view personal responsibility—can you see how this might influence daily decision-making?
