The First Two Pillars: Faith and Prayer
Shahadah is your declaration of faith - basically saying "I believe in Allah and Muhammad is his final messenger." It's the first pillar and reminds Muslims about tawhid (the oneness of God) every day. You'll hear this testimony throughout Muslim life because it's an act of submission to Allah.
Salah means prayer, and it's how Muslims show their submission to God five times daily. Before praying, Muslims must do wudu to prepare themselves spiritually. During salah, they recite verses from the Quran.
This daily prayer routine helps Muslims stay humble and reminds them to seek Allah's guidance in their lives. It's like a spiritual check-in that happens throughout the day.
Remember: These first two pillars focus on faith and regular spiritual connection with Allah.
Charity and Fasting: The Middle Pillars
Zakat is mandatory charity that purifies your wealth - think of it as recognising that everything you have is a blessing from Allah. If you've got enough savings, you give 2.5% once a year to support poor and needy people. It's not just being generous; it's acknowledging that the poor have rights to your wealth.
Sawm means fasting during Ramadan, the holy month. For about 29-30 days, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and bad habits during sunlight hours. It's both physical and spiritual.
Fasting helps Muslims appreciate what they have and remember those who go without. When you're hungry, you naturally think about people who don't have enough food.
Key point: Both zakat and sawm connect Muslims with those less fortunate and build empathy in their communities.

Hajj is the final pillar - a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim should try to complete if they're physically and financially able. The rituals connect back to Prophet Ibrahim's time, making it deeply historical.
