The Multi-Store Model Basics

Think of your memory like a factory assembly line - information moves through three separate storage areas before becoming a permanent memory. The multi-store model, created by Atkinson and Shiffrin in 1968, shows exactly how this process works.

Everything starts at the sensory register, which is basically your brain's first filter. Your eyes, ears, nose, and skin are constantly bombarded with information - the sound of traffic, the feel of your clothes, background conversations. Most of this stuff gets ignored and disappears within milliseconds.

Here's where it gets interesting: attention acts like a spotlight. When you focus on something specific (like your teacher explaining a key concept), that information gets transferred to the next stage. Without attention, information never makes it past this first hurdle.

Short-Term and Long-Term Memory

But here's the catch: STM has serious limitations. Information disappears quickly unless you actively rehearse it, and new information can push out old stuff because there's limited space. It's constantly in a fragile state.

Maintenance rehearsal - basically repeating information over and over - keeps things alive in STM. Do this enough, and the information eventually transfers to long-term memory (LTM). LTM is your brain's permanent storage with virtually unlimited capacity and duration.

Retrieval brings memories back from LTM through STM, making them available for use again. The model suggests that forgotten memories might still be stored - you just can't access them properly.

Reality Check: Critics argue this model oversimplifies memory. Real-world memory involves much more complex processes than simple repetition and storage.
