The Nervous System Overview
Think of your nervous system as your body's sophisticated control hub that never stops working. It's designed to collect information from your environment, process what's happening, and coordinate appropriate responses across all your organs and cells.
The central nervous system (CNS) includes your brain and spinal cord - basically your body's main processing unit. Your brain serves as the centre of all conscious awareness and is divided into two hemispheres, with the outer layer called the cerebral cortex being highly developed in humans (this is what sets us apart from other animals!). Meanwhile, your spinal cord acts as an extension of the brain and handles reflex actions like pulling your hand away from a hot flame.
The peripheral nervous system branches out from your CNS to connect with the rest of your body. This system has two main divisions that work in fascinating ways to keep you functioning properly.
Key Point: The brain stem controls many automatic functions, so you don't have to consciously remember to keep your heart beating or lungs breathing!
Peripheral Nervous System Branches
The peripheral nervous system splits into two crucial branches that control different aspects of your body's functions. Understanding these will help you see why your body reacts the way it does in various situations.
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls your internal organs and glands completely automatically - no conscious input required from you. This system works antagonistically, meaning only one part can be active at any time, like a biological see-saw.
The sympathetic branch kicks in during fight or flight situations, increasing your heart rate and breathing rate whilst dilating your pupils. However, it inhibits digestion and saliva production (your body's priorities shift to survival!). In contrast, the parasympathetic branch activates during rest and digest mode, decreasing heart rate, constricting pupils, and stimulating digestion.
The somatic nervous system handles everything under your conscious control - your muscles and skeletal system. Controlled by the motor cortex, this system connects your CNS to your senses and manages activities like running and walking.
Remember: You can only have one branch of the ANS active at once - you can't simultaneously be in fight-or-flight mode and rest-and-digest mode!
