Social Influence: The Psychology Behind Why We Follow Others

Obedience happens when you follow direct orders from someone in authority - like a teacher, parent, or police officer. Milgram's famous experiment showed just how powerful this can be. Participants thought they were giving electric shocks to a "learner" when they got answers wrong, with 65% delivering what they believed were dangerous 450-volt shocks simply because a researcher told them to continue.

Conformity is different - it's when you change your behaviour to fit in with a group, even without direct pressure. Asch's line study demonstrated this perfectly: when surrounded by people giving obviously wrong answers, 36.8% of participants conformed at least once, even though the correct answer was clear.

The Stanford Prison Experiment took this further, showing how quickly normal people can adopt extreme roles. Student volunteers randomly assigned as "guards" became increasingly harsh towards "prisoners" within days, proving that situations can dramatically shape behaviour.

Key Insight: Both obedience and conformity are incredibly powerful - understanding them helps you recognise when you might be influenced without realising it.

These studies reveal uncomfortable truths about human nature, but they also give you awareness to make more conscious choices about when to conform and when to resist social pressure.
