Nature vs Nurture
You've probably noticed how you share certain traits with your family whilst being completely different in other ways. This classic psychology debate examines whether our behaviour comes from biological factors (nature) or environmental influences (nurture).
Nature argues that your genes are the main driver. Family studies show fascinating patterns - the more genetically similar people are, the more likely they'll develop similar behaviours. Take schizophrenia: identical twins have a 40% concordance rate compared to just 7% for non-identical twins.
Evolutionary explanations suggest behaviours that helped our ancestors survive get passed down. Bowlby argued that forming close bonds with caregivers isn't just emotional - it's a survival strategy that protects genes and promotes successful relationships later.
Nurture focuses on how your environment shapes you through learning. Behaviourists believe classical and operant conditioning explain everything - from why babies bond with caregivers (they associate them with food) to how drive reduction removes discomfort. Social learning theory adds another layer, showing how we copy behaviours through vicarious reinforcement, though Bandura acknowledged biology still plays a role.
Key Insight: Most modern psychologists agree it's not either/or - nature and nurture work together to shape who you become.
