How Social Change Happens
The magic occurs through what's called the snowball effect. All three factors make people genuinely think about the topic, and gradually, individuals become 'converted' and switch sides. As more people join the minority, the conversion rate accelerates until eventually the minority view becomes the new majority - that's how real social change happens.
Moscovici's famous study perfectly demonstrates this process. Participants viewed 36 blue slides and had to identify the colour. When two confederates consistently called them "green," they influenced 8.42% of responses. When the confederates were inconsistent (saying green sometimes, blue other times), influence dropped to just 1.25%.
The control group with no confederates only gave 0.23% "green" responses, proving the minority's impact was real. This groundbreaking research showed that minorities can definitely influence majorities, but consistency is absolutely vital for success.
Remember: The study used clearly blue slides, so any "green" responses showed genuine minority influence at work.
