The Great Debate: Are You Really in Control?
Free will suggests you're the boss of your own mind. You actively choose how to think, feel, and behave every single day. Whether you decide to skip breakfast, text your mate, or procrastinate on homework - these are all genuine choices you make as a self-determined individual.
On the flip side, determinism argues that free will is just an elaborate trick your brain plays on you. Every decision feels like your choice, but it's actually the result of forces completely outside your control.
Hard determinism takes this to the extreme - absolutely everything is predetermined, and genuine choice is impossible. Soft determinism offers a middle ground, suggesting some aspects of behaviour are fixed whilst others remain within your control.
Think About It: If scientists could predict your next decision before you're even aware of making it, what would that mean for free will?
Three major types shape how determinism works: biological determinism (your genes and hormones call the shots), environmental determinism (past experiences control current behaviour), and psychic determinism (childhood experiences and unconscious drives determine everything).
