Understanding Obedience to Authority

When someone in a position of authority gives us an instruction, many of us comply without question. This happens through an agentic shift – where we transfer responsibility for our actions to someone else, rather than remaining in an autonomous state where we take full responsibility for our behaviour.

Milgram's famous research demonstrated that obedience rates vary significantly based on proximity to authority. People were much more likely to obey when the authority figure was in the same room (65%) compared to receiving instructions over the phone (20%). Similarly, Bicman's field experiment showed that people were more than twice as likely to obey someone in uniform (82%) versus not in uniform (36%).

The legitimacy of authority plays a crucial role in obedience. We're taught from childhood that following orders from legitimate authorities leads to social acceptance. This is especially true when the authority figure has the power to punish us or when we trust them. Real-life examples like Nazi commander Adolf Eichmann illustrate this concept – he defended his horrific actions by claiming he was "just following orders" and didn't see himself as responsible.

Remember this: The agentic shift explains why ordinary people can sometimes do extraordinary (even terrible) things when ordered to – they've mentally transferred responsibility to the authority figure giving the commands.

While this explanation helps us understand obedience patterns, critics note it offers an incomplete picture. It fails to account for other influences like personality factors (Berga's authoritarian personality research) and the complex interplay of social pressures that affect our decisions around authority figures.
