Independent Groups Design
Ever wondered why some experiments use completely different people for each test condition? That's independent groups design in action, and it's actually quite clever for avoiding certain problems.
The biggest win here is dodging order effects entirely. Since participants only experience one condition, you don't have to worry about them getting better through practice or becoming fed up and performing worse. It's also brilliant for keeping demand characteristics low - participants can't guess what you're testing if they only see half the experiment.
However, you'll need twice as many participants compared to other designs, which gets expensive fast. Plus, you've got minimal control over participant variables - those individual differences between people that might skew your results.
Quick tip: Independent groups work best when you've got plenty of participants and want to avoid practice effects!
Repeated Measures & Matched Pairs
Repeated measures design flips the script by using the same participants in all conditions. It's economical (fewer people needed) and gives you excellent control over participant variables since you're comparing people against themselves.
The downside? Order effects become a real headache, and participants are more likely to figure out your hypothesis, leading to problematic demand characteristics.
Matched pairs design tries to get the best of both worlds. You use different participants like independent groups, but carefully match them on key characteristics that might influence results (like age or ability level). This avoids order effects whilst maintaining some control over participant variables, though it's still expensive and time-consuming to set up properly.
Remember: Each design suits different research questions - there's no universally "best" option!
