Quantitative vs Qualitative Data
Think of quantitative data as anything you can stick a number on - how many people, how long something took, or scores on a test. It's brilliant for creating neat graphs and running statistical tests, making it fairly objective and easy to analyse.
The downside? It can feel a bit limiting. When you're forced to pick from set response options, you might miss the full picture of what's really happening in people's lives.
Qualitative data is the complete opposite - it's all about words, thoughts, feelings, and detailed opinions. This type of data gives you rich, expansive information that really gets under the skin of what people are experiencing.
However, qualitative data can be a right pain to analyse. It's time-consuming to sift through all those words, and different researchers might interpret the same responses differently, making it more subjective.
Quick tip: Remember that both types are empirical data - they're both gathered from actual research observations, not just made up!
