Lorenz's imprinting study provides compelling evidence that attachment is truly innate rather than learned. When newly hatched geese immediately followed Lorenz everywhere after seeing him first, it showed attachment happens too quickly to be a learned behaviour.
The internal working model gets strong support from Hazen and Shaver's famous "love quiz" research. They found clear correlations between childhood attachment styles and adult romantic relationships - secure children typically became adults with loving, long-lasting partnerships.
Key Point: This continuity from childhood to adulthood suggests our early relationships really do create templates for future ones, just as Bowlby predicted.
However, Howes et al's research challenges this template idea by showing children can have completely different attachment styles with parents versus peers. This suggests our relationship patterns might be more flexible than Bowlby originally thought.
The biggest criticism of Bowlby's theory is that it's deterministic - meaning it suggests your childhood attachment completely determines your future relationship success. If you had neglectful parents or insecure attachments, the theory implies you're destined for dysfunctional relationships forever.
This deterministic view ignores free will and people's ability to grow and change. Many individuals with difficult childhoods go on to form healthy, loving relationships as adults through conscious effort and personal development.
Remember: Theories aren't perfect - they're frameworks for understanding, not absolute rules about human behaviour.
The theory also focuses heavily on monotropy (one primary caregiver), which doesn't reflect modern family structures where children successfully bond with multiple caregivers. This limitation makes Bowlby's original theory feel somewhat outdated in today's diverse family arrangements.
