Pavlov's Classical Conditioning Research
You've probably heard of Pavlov's dogs, but there's more to this research than you might think. Pavlov (1927) discovered that dogs could learn to salivate at the sound of a bell - even when no food was present. He did this by repeatedly pairing a neutral stimulus (bell) with food until the bell alone triggered salivation.
This process showed us classical conditioning in action. Before conditioning, food (unconditioned stimulus) naturally caused salivation (unconditioned response). After repeatedly pairing the bell with food, the bell became a conditioned stimulus that produced the learned response of salivation.
Pavlov also discovered stimulus generalisation - dogs would salivate to bells with different pitches and tones. However, when sounds were too different, stimulus discrimination occurred, and the dogs wouldn't respond. The timing mattered too - stimuli had to be paired close together in time for learning to happen.
Quick Tip: Think of how hearing your phone's notification sound makes you reach for it automatically - that's classical conditioning in your daily life!
The research gave psychology serious scientific credibility by using controlled laboratory methods. It's led to practical therapies for phobias and addictions, like systematic desensitisation and aversion therapy. However, critics argue it involved invasive procedures on animals and ignores free will by suggesting our behaviour is purely determined by learned associations.

Learning Through Consequences: Skinner and Bandura
Skinner's operant conditioning research used puzzle boxes with rats and pigeons to show how consequences shape behaviour. When rats pressed a lever, they received food pellets (positive reinforcement), avoided electric shocks (negative reinforcement), or received punishment. The most effective was variable ratio reinforcement - rewarding behaviour unpredictably, which explains why slot machines are so addictive!
Skinner developed the ABC model: Antecedents (what happens before), Behaviours (the action), and Consequences (what follows). This scientific approach boosted psychology's credibility and led to token economy systems used in psychiatric wards and prisons.
Bandura's Bobo doll experiments (1961, 1963) revealed how children learn through observation. Kids who watched adults attack a Bobo doll with hammers became more aggressive themselves. When children saw adults being rewarded for aggression, they were most likely to copy the behaviour. Same-gender role models were copied more frequently.
Real World Connection: Social media influencers work on Bandura's principles - we copy behaviours we see being 'rewarded' with likes and comments!
Critics point out limitations: Skinner's work involved animal harm and may not apply to complex human behaviour. Bandura's research showed boys were consistently more aggressive than girls, suggesting biological factors (like testosterone) matter too. The Bobo doll experiments also lacked ecological validity since the doll was designed to be hit anyway.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
