Social-Psychological Factors in Obedience
You'll encounter obedience everywhere in daily life, and Milgram's research reveals exactly why we comply with authority figures. His groundbreaking work identified key factors that make us surprisingly willing to follow orders.
Agentic state is when you stop taking personal responsibility and see yourself as just carrying out someone else's instructions. Think about it - when a teacher tells you to do something, you're acting as their 'agent' rather than making your own choice. People in this state experience moral strain (that uncomfortable feeling when you know something's wrong) but feel powerless to resist.
The opposite is the autonomous state, where you're independent and make your own decisions. The agentic shift describes moving from being autonomous to becoming someone's agent - this transition is crucial for understanding obedience.

The Six Key Factors of Obedience
Legitimacy of authority explains why we naturally accept that certain people have power over us. Police, teachers, and bouncers all gain authority through institutions we trust. Without this social hierarchy, society simply wouldn't function smoothly.
Proximity matters more than you'd think. When authority figures are physically closer, obedience increases dramatically. However, being closer to the victim decreases obedience - Milgram found obedience dropped to just 40% when participants could see the person being harmed.
Uniforms carry massive psychological weight. A lab coat or police uniform instantly signals authority, whilst removing these symbols reduces obedience significantly. Location also influences behaviour - prestigious institutions command more respect and higher obedience rates than run-down offices.
Finally, authoritarian personality describes people who are naturally submissive to higher status individuals but dismissive of those they see as inferior. These individuals typically hold very conventional attitudes and are more likely to obey without question.
