Constitutional Reform Under Labour
Think of constitutional reform as Britain's political makeover – it's how we change the rules about who has power and how they use it. Unlike Conservatives who prefer leaving things as they are, Labour governments love tinkering with the system.
Between 1997-2010, Tony Blair's Labour government went reform-crazy. They tackled devolution (giving power to Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), stripped most hereditary peers from the House of Lords, and created a Supreme Court. The Human Rights Act 1998 was huge – it brought European human rights directly into UK law, meaning British courts could finally protect your rights without sending cases to Europe.
