Classical Liberal Thinkers: The Foundations of Freedom
John Locke basically invented the idea that governments need your permission to rule you. He argued that society existed before governments did, with natural rights and laws already in place. His big idea? We voluntarily give up some freedom to the state through a social contract (like a constitution) because it's the best way to protect our basic liberties.
Locke was obsessed with property rights, believing that when you mix your labour with something, it becomes yours. This became the foundation for capitalism and why we still debate about fair wages and ownership today.
John Stuart Mill took things further by developing the harm principle - you should be free to do whatever you want as long as it doesn't harm others. Sounds simple, but it's actually revolutionary when you think about drug laws, free speech, or personal relationships.
Mill worried about the "tyranny of the majority" - basically, what happens when popular opinion crushes individual rights. He wanted representative democracy but with strong protections for minorities and individuals who think differently.
Key Insight: Mill's harm principle is still used today in debates about everything from smoking bans to online speech regulations.
Mary Wollstonecraft was centuries ahead of her time, arguing that women are just as rational as men but appear inferior due to lack of education and opportunities. She wanted to replace monarchies with republics that gave women the vote and economic freedom, calling women without these rights "domestic slaves."
