Labour Party: From Socialism to Pragmatism
Labour represents the fascinating evolution from Old Labour's democratic socialism to New Labour's acceptance of capitalism with strong social protections. Old Labour focused on wealth redistribution and class conflict, whilst New Labour emphasises equality of opportunity over strict equality of outcome.
Modern Labour promises to increase corporation tax and raise taxes on the top 5% of earners whilst adding 22,000 new police officers. They want to scrap university tuition fees and add VAT to private school fees - classic wealth redistribution policies.
Their nationalisation plans are ambitious, targeting railways, broadband, and postal services. On Europe, they'd negotiate a new EU deal allowing freedom of movement for all EU citizens. Environmental commitments include a massive £30 billion green fund and mandating electric cars by 2030.
Remember: New Labour accepts capitalism but wants to control it - they're not anti-business, just pro-worker protection within a market economy.
