Milestones in the Development of Rights
Your civil liberties didn't appear overnight - they're the result of centuries of political struggle. The Magna Carta (1215) started it all by establishing that even kings must follow the law and guaranteeing fair trials. Fast-forward to 1689, and the Bill of Rights created our constitutional monarchy, meaning monarchs can't just do whatever they fancy.
Some key legal cases shaped modern Britain too. Somerset v Stewart (1772) began dismantling slavery, whilst Entick v Carrington (1765) protected citizens from government overreach. The 1928 Representation of the People Act finally gave everyone the vote, regardless of gender.
Recent developments include the Human Rights Act (1998), which brought European human rights directly into British law, and the 2010 Equality Act, making discrimination illegal across age, disability, race, religion, and sexuality. However, there's ongoing debate about whether we need a British Bill of Rights to replace European influence.

Pressure Groups and Democratic Influence
