Transverse & Longitudinal Waves
Ever wondered why a guitar string moves differently from sound travelling through air? It's all about the two main types of waves: transverse and longitudinal waves.
Transverse waves are like doing the wave at a football stadium – the particles move up and down whilst the energy travels horizontally. The vibrations happen at right angles to the direction the wave is moving. Think of a rope being wiggled or ripples on water.
Longitudinal waves work completely differently. Here, particles vibrate back and forth in the same direction as the wave travels. All longitudinal waves need a medium (like air, water, or solid materials) to travel through – they can't exist in empty space.
In longitudinal waves, you'll see compressions (where particles bunch together) and rarefactions (where particles spread apart). Sound waves are perfect examples of this type.
💡 Remember: The wave energy travels, but the medium itself doesn't move from place to place – just like how a cork bobs up and down on water waves but doesn't travel across the pond.
