Every atom contains three types of particles with different charges. Protons carry a positive charge (+), electrons have a negative charge (-), and neutrons are completely neutral with no charge at all.
Static electricity forms when electrons jump from one object to another through friction. When you rub a balloon on your jumper, the balloon gains electrons from the fabric, making it negatively charged overall.
Meanwhile, your jumper loses electrons to the balloon, leaving it with more protons than electrons. This makes the jumper positively charged, which is why the balloon will stick to it afterwards.
Quick Tip Remember that only electrons move between objects - protons stay put in the nucleus!
The tissue pickup experiment perfectly demonstrates how charged objects interact with neutral materials. When you rub a plastic ruler on cloth, electrons transfer from the cloth to the ruler, giving the ruler a strong negative charge.
Bringing the charged ruler near tissue paper causes something fascinating to happen. The electrons in the tissue start moving around because they're repelled by the ruler's negative charge. This creates an imbalance that makes the tissue attracted to the ruler.
You'll see the tissue jump up towards the ruler and hover for a few seconds before dropping down. This happens because the attraction weakens as the charges gradually leak away through the air.
Remember Like charges repel each other, whilst opposite charges attract - this is why the negatively charged ruler can pick up the tissue!
