Seismic Waves and Earth's Structure
When earthquakes strike, they create two types of seismic waves that travel through the Earth like ripples in a pond. These waves are brilliant natural tools that help scientists understand what's happening deep inside our planet.
P-waves (primary waves) are longitudinal waves that move faster than their counterpart and can travel through both solids and liquids. Think of them as the speedy messengers that arrive first at monitoring stations around the world.
S-waves (secondary waves) are transverse waves that move more slowly and have a crucial limitation - they can only travel through solids. This characteristic makes them incredibly useful for detecting different materials inside the Earth.
