Types of Nuclear Radiation

Alpha particles are the heavyweight bullies of radiation—they pack a punch but don't travel far. Made up of 2 protons and 2 neutrons, they're basically helium nuclei that get ejected from unstable atoms. When an atom releases an alpha particle, it loses those 2 protons and 2 neutrons from its nucleus.

Beta particles are speedy electrons that zoom out when a neutron inside the nucleus transforms into a proton and an electron. This electron gets fired out at high speed, whilst the proton stays behind in the nucleus. Beta radiation has high ionising power, meaning it's quite good at knocking electrons out of other atoms it encounters.

Gamma radiation is pure electromagnetic energy—think of it like extremely powerful X-rays. Unlike alpha and beta particles, gamma rays don't involve any actual particles leaving the nucleus. Instead, the nucleus just releases excess energy to become more stable, similar to how a light bulb releases energy as visible light.

Quick tip: Remember the pattern—alpha particles are heavy and slow, beta particles are light and fast, and gamma rays are pure energy travelling at the speed of light!

Each type of radiation has different penetrating power. Alpha particles can barely make it through a sheet of paper, beta particles can travel about a metre in air before being stopped by aluminium, and gamma rays can travel virtually unlimited distances in air and need thick lead or metres of concrete to stop them.
