Wave Movement vs Medium Movement
Here's something that might surprise you: when waves travel, it's only the wave pattern that moves, not the actual medium! This is brilliant evidence that waves transfer energy without transferring matter.
Think of a spring demonstration. For transverse waves, imagine a single point on the spring representing a water molecule. When the wave passes through, that point bounces up and down but doesn't actually travel along the spring. The wave pattern moves sideways, but the "molecule" stays in roughly the same position.
The same principle applies to longitudinal waves. A point on the spring representing an air particle oscillates back and forth as the sound wave passes, but doesn't travel through the medium. This is why you don't feel a gust of wind when someone shouts at you - the sound energy reaches you, but the air particles stay put.
Real-World Connection: This is why surfers can ride waves - the water moves up and down, but doesn't carry them towards shore. Only the wave energy moves forward!
