Understanding Waves in Physics: Transverse and Longitudinal

Wave Types and Motion
Transverse waves are the easier ones to picture - imagine flicking a rope up and down. The particles move perpendicular (at 90 degrees) to where the wave's energy is actually going. You'll see these waves have clear peaks (the high points) and troughs (the low points).
Water waves and all electromagnetic radiation are transverse waves. What's brilliant about electromagnetic waves is they don't need any material to travel through - they can zoom through empty space, which is why sunlight reaches Earth.
Longitudinal waves work completely differently. Here, particles vibrate back and forth in the same direction as the wave travels - think of pushing and pulling a spring. Instead of peaks and troughs, you get compressions (where particles bunch together) and rarefactions (where they spread apart).
Sound waves are the classic example of longitudinal waves. Unlike electromagnetic waves, these absolutely need a medium (solid, liquid, or gas) to travel through, which is why there's no sound in space.
Key difference: Transverse = particles move sideways to energy flow; Longitudinal = particles move along with energy flow
The main thing to remember for your exams is that transverse waves can travel through vacuum (if they're electromagnetic), whilst longitudinal waves always need matter to move through. Both types transfer energy without actually moving matter from place to place.
