Energy Efficiency and Waste
Your laptop heating up whilst you're gaming isn't just annoying - it's actually showing you how mechanical waste energy works in real life. When devices operate, some energy always gets converted into forms we don't want, like heat, light, or sound.
Think about it: a car engine produces heat and noise alongside the motion you actually need. This waste energy happens because no machine is 100% perfect. The energy doesn't disappear (that's impossible), but it spreads into the surroundings in ways that don't help us.
Efficiency is the magic number that tells us how good a device is at its job. The formula is simple: divide the useful energy output by the total energy input, then multiply by 100 for a percentage. A 55% efficient lamp means 55J out of every 100J becomes useful light, whilst 45J becomes unwanted heat.
Quick Tip: Higher efficiency percentages mean less energy waste and lower running costs - that's why LED bulbs are brilliant compared to old filament ones!
