Direct current (DC) flows steadily in one direction, like water down a hill. Alternating current (AC) constantly changes direction - this is what comes from your wall sockets because it's more efficient for long-distance transmission.
Household electricity uses three wires: the live wire (carries current), neutral wire (completes the circuit), and earth wire (safety feature). The fuse acts like a safety valve, breaking the circuit if too much current flows.
The National Grid is Britain's massive electrical network connecting power stations to every home and business. Step-up transformers increase voltage for efficient long-distance transmission through high-voltage lines, whilst step-down transformers reduce it to safe levels for household use.
Remember: High voltage = less energy loss over long distances, which is why the National Grid uses such high voltages between cities.
