Energy Stores and Transfer
Every object around you stores energy in different ways, and understanding this is your key to mastering physics. Kinetic energy belongs to moving objects (think speeding cars), whilst gravitational potential energy exists in anything that's been lifted up (like a book on a shelf). The formula Ek = ½mv² shows that doubling speed actually quadruples the kinetic energy - pretty mental when you think about it.
Thermal energy lives in absolutely everything, and when objects heat up, their particles vibrate more frantically. Chemical energy gets locked away in substances until reactions release it, whilst elastic potential energy builds up in stretched or compressed things like springs.
Here's the golden rule that'll save you in exams: energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred. Some transfers are useful (like petrol powering your car), but loads gets wasted as heat to the surroundings - nothing's 100% efficient in the real world.
Quick Tip: When tackling energy problems, always identify what type of energy you're starting with and what you're ending up with!
Power and Energy Sources
Power measures how quickly energy gets transferred - it's literally energy divided by time. Think of it like this: a 100W light bulb uses energy twice as fast as a 50W bulb, which is why your electricity bill depends on both the power rating and how long you leave things switched on.
Renewable energy sources are absolutely massive in today's world. Solar panels work brilliantly in sunny countries but obviously can't generate power at night. Wind turbines produce clean electricity but only when it's actually windy - bit awkward when there's no breeze for days.
Hydroelectric dams can ramp up power production when demand peaks, making them dead reliable. However, they completely transform local environments and can mess with animal habitats. Non-renewable sources like fossil fuels still dominate because they're incredibly reliable and can meet current energy demands.
The efficiency equation (useful energy output ÷ total energy input) tells you exactly how much energy gets wasted. Most car engines only achieve about 25% efficiency - the rest disappears as heat through the exhaust and engine cooling.
