Energy Resources and Alternatives
Fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas power most of our lives right now, but they're running out fast. Oil and gas might only last another 50 years, which means you'll definitely see this change in your lifetime!
These traditional energy sources create serious problems beyond just running out. When we burn coal and oil, they release sulfur dioxide (hello, acid rain!) and greenhouse gases that speed up climate change. Plus, renewable energy can't quite match our current massive energy demands yet.
The good news? We've got loads of alternatives already working. Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity with minimal environmental impact, though they need loads of space and sunshine. Wind turbines create jobs and produce clean energy, but they're unreliable and unfortunately deadly for birds.
Quick Fact: Biofuels are carbon neutral, meaning they absorb as much CO₂ when growing as they release when burned!
Hydroelectric power uses flowing water to generate reliable, low-cost energy, but it can seriously mess with local ecosystems. Meanwhile, nuclear power is incredibly energy-dense and creates jobs, though the radioactive waste and potential accidents make people nervous.

Managing electricity supply is like trying to predict when everyone will make tea during a TV advert break - electricity demand constantly changes throughout the day and seasons. This creates massive headaches for energy companies trying to keep the lights on.
Different power stations have wildly different start-up times. Gas-fuelled stations can fire up quickly when demand spikes, whilst nuclear plants take ages to get going. That's why pumped-storage stations are brilliant - they're like giant batteries that can instantly release power when needed.
Here's the financial reality: nuclear power stations cost an absolute fortune to build, run, and eventually shut down safely. The start-up costs include construction, staff training, and getting everything running smoothly. Then you've got ongoing running costs like fuel, maintenance, and eventually decommissioning the whole thing.
Money Matters: Renewable sources flip the usual cost model - massive upfront investment but virtually free running costs afterwards!
Renewable energy sources are cheap to run once they're built, but getting them started requires serious cash. It's like buying an expensive electric car that costs pennies to charge - the initial hit is painful, but you save money long-term.
