Think of nuclear fusion as smashing two small things together to make something bigger, whilst nuclear fission is like cracking open a massive atom to break it into smaller pieces. Both processes release enormous amounts of energy, but they work in totally opposite ways.

When these heavy nuclei absorb a neutron, they become so unstable they immediately split. This releases kinetic energy from the flying fragments plus dangerous gamma radiation. The released neutrons can then hit other nuclei, causing a chain reaction.

This chain reaction is what powers nuclear reactors for electricity generation and, unfortunately, atomic weapons. Nuclear power stations carefully control this reaction using control rods, whilst atomic bombs let it run wild for maximum destruction.
