Nuclear Fusion vs Nuclear Fission: The Basics
Think of nuclear fusion as smashing two small things together to make something bigger, whilst nuclear fission is like cracking open a massive atom to break it into smaller pieces. Both processes release enormous amounts of energy, but they work in totally opposite ways.
Fusion joins two or more lightweight atoms into a single, heavier one. This is what powers our sun - hydrogen atoms crash together under incredible pressure to form helium. Fission splits one heavy atom into two or more smaller atoms, which is how nuclear power stations generate electricity.
The key difference is the starting material: fusion uses tiny, light atoms whilst fission needs massive, heavy atoms that are already unstable and ready to break apart.

Nuclear Fusion: The Sun's Secret
Nuclear fusion happens when two light atomic nuclei crash together with such force that they stick together, creating a heavier nucleus and releasing massive amounts of energy. This is literally what makes our sun shine every day.
The process requires extreme conditions - we're talking millions of degrees and crushing pressure. These conditions force the positively charged nuclei to overcome their natural repulsion (like trying to push two magnets together). Once they finally touch, they fuse and release energy as light and heat.
Scientists are working on projects like ITER to create controlled fusion reactions here on Earth. If successful, this could provide clean, unlimited energy since fusion produces more energy per reaction than fission and doesn't create dangerous radioactive waste.
Nuclear Fission: Splitting Atoms for Power
Nuclear fission occurs when a heavy atomic nucleus splits into smaller pieces, releasing energy in the process. Unlike fusion, fission uses massive atoms like uranium-235 or plutonium-239 that are already unstable and ready to break apart.
When these heavy nuclei absorb a neutron, they become so unstable they immediately split. This releases kinetic energy from the flying fragments plus dangerous gamma radiation. The released neutrons can then hit other nuclei, causing a chain reaction.
This chain reaction is what powers nuclear reactors for electricity generation and, unfortunately, atomic weapons. Nuclear power stations carefully control this reaction using control rods, whilst atomic bombs let it run wild for maximum destruction.
