Types of Resistors and How They Combine
You can measure resistance directly using an ohmmeter, but the really interesting stuff happens with variable resistors. These clever components change their resistance based on external conditions - thermistors respond to temperature changes, whilst light dependent resistors (LDRs) react to light levels.
Most thermistors decrease in resistance as temperature rises, making them perfect for temperature sensors in everything from car engines to home thermostats. LDRs work oppositely with light - more light means less resistance, which is why they're used in automatic street lighting.
When you combine resistors in circuits, the maths is surprisingly straightforward. In series circuits, just add them up: R_total = R₁ + R₂ + R₃. In parallel circuits, use the reciprocal formula: 1/R_total = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + 1/R₃.
Remember: Parallel resistance is always smaller than the smallest individual resistor - this is because you're giving current more paths to flow through!
What is Electrical Resistance?
Think of resistance like friction for electricity - it's what slows down the flow of electrical charge through any material. The higher the resistance, the less current can flow through a circuit, which is why choosing the right components matters in electronics.
Resistance is measured in ohms (Ω), and this measurement follows a simple relationship called Ohm's Law. The formula is straightforward: Resistance = Voltage ÷ Current . This means if you know any two values, you can always work out the third.
Here's the key thing to remember: for most resistors, the ratio of voltage to current stays constant as long as temperature doesn't change. However, some components like light bulbs have variable resistance that changes with temperature, which is why they don't follow Ohm's Law perfectly.
Quick Tip: You can find a resistor's exact resistance by plotting voltage against current on a graph - the gradient of that straight line gives you the resistance value!
