Transport and Electricity Generation
Most cars still run on petrol or diesel from crude oil, but electric vehicles are becoming more popular. They produce zero emissions whilst driving, but remember - when you charge them, you're using electricity from the National Grid, which still gets most of its power from fossil fuels.
Biofuels offer another alternative that's renewable, though whether they're truly carbon-neutral is still debated by scientists. The big picture is that nearly 8 billion people need electricity, creating massive demand.
Unfortunately, about 84% of the world's energy still comes from non-renewable sources that pump out carbon emissions. This is why scientists are frantically developing better ways to generate clean electricity - the environmental impact is enormous.
Think about it: Every time you charge your phone, you're connected to power stations that might be burning fossil fuels hundreds of miles away!
