Magnets and Magnetic Fields
Every magnet has two distinct ends called magnetic poles – a north pole and a south pole. Just like with people, opposites attract! Different poles pull towards each other, whilst like poles push away from each other.
The key difference between materials lies in how long they stay magnetised. Magnetically hard materials keep their magnetism even after you remove whatever made them magnetic – that's why your fridge magnets don't suddenly fall off. Magnetically soft materials lose their magnetism as soon as the magnetic field is removed, making them perfect for temporary magnets like electromagnets.
Magnetic field lines show you exactly how the magnetic force flows from north to south pole. These invisible lines never cross each other, and you can actually see their pattern using a simple compass experiment.
Quick Tip: When drawing magnetic field diagrams, remember that field lines always flow from north to south – just like water flowing downhill!
The strength and pattern of magnetic fields change dramatically depending on how you arrange your magnets. When opposite poles face each other, they create a strong, concentrated field that pulls them together. When like poles face each other, they create a weak area between them where the magnetic forces actually cancel out.
