The History of the Atom
Describe how and why the atomic model has changed over time.

The History of the Atom

Back in the 1870s, John Dalton started this whole journey by suggesting that everything was made of incredibly small, solid spheres called atoms. He thought these were basically tiny, indestructible balls - a bit like microscopic marbles that couldn't be broken down any further.

Then in 1894, J.J. Thomson completely changed everything whilst studying something called cathode rays. He discovered tiny particles that were smaller and lighter than atoms, and they had a negative charge - he called these electrons. This was massive because it proved atoms weren't just solid spheres!

Thomson came up with the plum pudding model to explain his discovery. Picture a Christmas pudding with raisins scattered throughout - that's basically what he thought atoms looked like, with electrons (the raisins) spread through a positive sphere (the pudding).

Key Point: Each scientist built on previous work, showing how scientific knowledge develops over time through experimentation and evidence.

Everything changed again in 1909 when Ernest Rutherford and his team did the famous gold foil experiment. They fired positively charged particles at a thin sheet of gold, expecting them all to pass straight through. Most did, but some bounced back completely! This led Rutherford to discover the nucleus - a tiny, dense, positively charged centre where most of an atom's mass is concentrated.

Modern Atomic Theory and Structure

In 1913, Niels Bohr gave us the model that's closest to what we use today. He proposed that electrons don't just float randomly around the nucleus - instead, they move in fixed paths called electron shells. Think of it like planets orbiting the sun, but with specific routes they have to follow.

Each electron shell has a fixed energy level, which explains why electrons can't just be anywhere around the nucleus. This model finally made sense of how atoms actually behave and why they form the compounds we see around us.

Atoms are absolutely tiny - about 1 × 10⁻¹⁰ metres in diameter. That's 0.0000000001 metres! To put that in perspective, if an atom was the size of a football stadium, the nucleus would be about the size of a marble in the centre.

Remember: The three main particles are protons positivecharge,mass=1positive charge, mass = 1, neutrons nocharge,mass=1no charge, mass = 1, and electrons negativecharge,almostnomass=0.0005negative charge, almost no mass = 0.0005.

When atoms join together, they form molecules. Small molecules are roughly the same size as individual atoms, which gives you an idea of just how incredibly small we're talking about here!
